How to Render a DIB to an EMF

The Device Independent Bitmap or .Dib file is the format used in Microsoft Windows applications. The .Dib file can be opened in image-viewing applications such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Windows Photo Viewer. The .Emf file is a vector image file that can be smoother than the .Dib file and good for using in computer graphics or animations. With the free Inkscape graphics software, you can render your .Dib file to an .Emf file.

      Double-click your computer's Web browser icon and navigate to inkscape.org. Click the "Download Now" link to download the free Inkscape software. Save the download to your desktop. Double-click the download to install it onto your computer.

      Double-click the Inkscape icon to launch the program. Click "File," "Open" and double-click the .Dib file you want to render to an .Emf.

      Press "Shift," "Alt" and "B" together to open the bitmap tracing function. Apply each of the filters displayed in the "Tracing Window" to the .Dib file.

      Modify the "Brightness" to the level you need and edit "Optimal Edge Detection" to create thick or soft tracing lines.

      Click "File," "Save As" and select "EMF" as the file format. Name your file and click "Save" to render your .Dib to an .Emf.
