You can play music, audiobooks and podcasts with iTunes.

If you are in the mood to listen to some audio on your computer with iTunes you can make better adjustments to the way it sounds if you learn to decipher how the audio effects work. Apple installs a free copy of the iTunes application on every new Mac and people can also download the free Windows version of iTunes to their PC. You will want to use different effects depending on what kind of audio you are listening to.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch iTunes on your computer.

    • 2

Click “Music” under “Library” in the left pane of the iTunes window to see a list of your songs. Click a song to select it, then click the “Play” button to start playing it.

    • 3

Click “View” from the iTunes menu, then click “Equalizer” and the Equalizer window appears.

    • 4

Understand that the equalizer has a variety of settings to enhance different genres of music. For example, you would use the “Bass Booster” setting if you are playing music with a heavy bass sound such as for songs to play while people dance at a loud party. You could use the “Classical” setting to listen to recordings of orchestral pieces. You can also make customized equalizer settings by dragging the sliders for each frequency up or down.

Realize that some recordings could be too soft or too loud for your sensibilities, and that you can adjust the volume by changing the preamp’s settings. The preamp control is located on the Equalizer panel. Click the “Preamp” check box to select it, then drag the slider up to increase the base volume of an audio file and drag the slider down to reduce the base volume of the audio file. The preamp affects the volume of an audio file independently of the volume control slider that appears on the main iTunes window next to the playback controls.

Be aware that you can apply other audio effects in the iTunes preferences window. Click “Edit” from the iTunes menu and click “Preferences.” Click “Playback.” Understand that when you click the “Crossfade Songs” check box to select it you are enabling an effect that makes the ending of one song crossfade into the beginning of the next song. You might prefer to listen to songs segueing in this fashion instead of hearing one song end, then silence, then the next song. Drag the crossfade slider to the left to decrease the amount of time for the crossfade and drag it to the right to increase the amount of time.

Know that you can enrich the sound of your audio by clicking the “Sound Enhancer” check box in the Playback preferences window. The Sound Enhancer effect alters the treble and bass tones to increase your perception of an audio file’s stereo effect. Drag the Sound Enhancer slider to the left to lessen the effect and drag it to the right to increase the effect. Play music while you adjust the controls to get an idea of how they affect the audio quality.
