Removing Linoleum Glue From Particle Board

Particle board is a dense, durable material made primarily of sawdust and shavings of wood. It often is used in subflooring and in other indoor applications. The particle board is held together by strong adhesives and resins that hold the sawdust and other wood material together. As a result, the particle board can crumble if it is not properly cared for. Linoleum glue is very sticky and challenging to get off once it's dried as it is. Removing the glue from a particle board surface without damaging the board is additionally challenging. Instructions

    • 1

Hold a scraper or a razor blade up against the base of the dried glue. Keep the blade as perpendicular to the particle board as possible.

    • 2

Apply light pressure to the glue, then gradually increase it until the majority of the glue pops up.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of either rubbing alcohol or white vinegar over any remaining glue stains and let it soak in for several minutes. Apply a scrub brush to the glue.

    • 4

Dip a rag in a small amount of paint thinner and scrub at any stubborn linoleum glue with the rag. Once the glue is moist with the thinner, either try the scraper or razor again, or scrub at the particle board with the scrub brush. Rinse the area in a small amount of water afterward to remove any additional paint thinner, but avoid getting the particle board too wet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear protective gloves to prevent the blade or scraper from cutting you.

  • Paint thinner is corrosive and has strong fumes, so ventilate the area and wear protective clothing when working with it.
