How to Let Linux Read in Arabic

Ubuntu Linux offers support for several different languages, including Arabic. Some editions of Ubuntu include built-in foreign language support, but if Arabic text displays as jumbled characters or boxes, you can install the associated language pack to the operating system to enable Linux to read Arabic text.

Instructions

    • 1

Select "System" from the menu bar. Point to "Administration," and then click "Language Support."

    • 2

Select "Install/Remove Languages" from the "Language" tab. Check the box to the right of "Arabic." Confirm "Translations," "Input Methods," "Extra Fonts" and "Spellchecking and Writing Aids" are checked.

    • 3

Click "Apply Changes." Input your password when prompted, and then click "Authenticate." Ubuntu will install the new language pack to enable Linux to read input and output text in Arabic.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the message "Package Is Already Installed" appears, Ubuntu Linux already has Arabic support.
