Quilts make beautiful art pieces.

Quilts are often beautiful, handmade folk art pieces treasured by families for generations. It is common to hang quilts as wall art so family and friends can enjoy the craft, skill and beauty of the piece. Hanging a quilt should be done thoughtfully. Quilts, particularly older ones, can be fragile and hanging can stress or ruin the fibers of the quilt. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the horizontal width of the quilt in the direction you wish to hang it. Subtract 4 inches. Cut sturdy fabric 8 inches wide by this length.

    • 2

Turn the short end of the fabric under 1/2 inch and sew with a hem seam. Repeat for the second end.

    • 3

Fold the fabric face sides together along the long side. Pin and sew a 1/2-inch seam along the length. Turn the tube or loop right side out.

    • 4

Place the quilt face side down on the work table. Position the loop centered on the quilt 1 inch from the top edge. Pin the loop to the quilt.

    • 5

Thread a needle with heavy duty thread. Sew the loop to the backing, liner and wadding only. Sew along the bottom edge of the loop using a slip stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • For fragile quilts, it is often necessary to create a backing out of a sturdy new fabric. Hand stitch the quilt to the backing following museum and preservation guidelines. This will allow the backing to take up the weight of the fabric and fibers. The loop would attach only to the backing so the actual quilt is not stressed by the weight of the hanging.
