How to Ask Stores to Donate Things for Raffles
A raffle is a great way to raise funds for an organization, but in order to bring in as much money as possible, organizers must fill the raffle with high-value items. In most communities, that means appealing to local businesses to donate merchandise, gift certificates or services. Some of the best items to raffle off include vacations, dinners for two, autographed memorabilia, electronics and gift baskets filled with goodies.

1
Make a wish list of items you would like to raffle and a list of stores and businesses to approach. For example, you might approach a travel agency or resort about a gift certificate for a weekend getaway, or an electronics store for a television.
-
2
Find out who is in charge of making decisions regarding donated items and set up a time to meet. Be sure to choose a time of day when the store or business is not busy.
-
-
3
Write a brief, clear, informative letter about your organization, when the raffle will be held and what the funds will be used for. Have the letter with you when you meet with the store owner or manger.
-
4
Speak with the manager and let him know the type of items you are looking for. Discuss your shared community interests, and how his donation will benefit the organization.
-
5
Leave a copy of the letter at every store you visit. If the manager is not available on your first visit, ask when you should return.
-
6
Follow up within 24 hours to see if the manager is interested in donating. You will also want to follow up to say thank you for the manager's time and donation. Send a hand-written note after the auction letting each business know how much was raised and to say thank you one last time.

Tips & Warnings
Start searching for donations early, because some businesses require upper-district or corporate-management approval before being able to donate.
