How to Make a Bed Skirt for a Bed That Has a Footboard
A bed skirt adds a contrasting band of fabric to your bed dressing and it allows you to hide the area under the bed. If you have a footboard on your bed, your bed skirt needs to fall to either side, but not down the foot of the bed. Sew your own bed skirt to accommodate your bed, creating a look that is uniquely your own. This project requires a small amount of sewing knowledge. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Remove the mattress, exposing the box spring.
-
2
Measure the length and the width of the top of the box spring and add 1 inch to both of these dimensions.
-
-
3
Cut a rectangle of fabric that matches the measurements you found in Step 2. Depending on the size of the bed, you may have to piece the rectangle together. This is the decking that is sandwiched between the box spring and the mattress, so you can use a plain, cheap fabric, like muslin.
-
4
Measure the distance from the top of the box spring to the floor and add 1 inch.
-
5
Cut two rectangles of fashion fabric that are as wide as the measurement found in Step 4 and as long as the measurement of the length of the mattress, plus 1 inch. This is the visible part of your bed skirt.
-
6
Hem the two short sides of the decking by turning the edges down twice, creating a fold that is ¼ inch deep both times. This creates a finished edge with no loose threads visible. Sew the folds flat by using a sewing machine to run a line of stitching along the length of the fold.
-
7
Hem both short sides and one long edge on each of the rectangles cut from the fashion fabric.
-
8
Lay one rectangle of fashion fabric on top of the decking, matching up the long edges with the pattern side facing in.
-
9
Sew the long edges together, ¼ inch from the edge of the fabric.
-
10
Repeat Steps 8 and 9 for the other side.
-
11
Position the bed skirt on top of the box spring with all the seams facing down.
-
12
Place the mattress back on top of the box spring and the bed skirt.
