How to Make Compressed Paper Logs
Many homeowners use wood-burning stoves or fireplaces to heat their homes. While aesthetically pleasing, burning wood can get expensive and contributes to deforestation. A cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative is to make your own compressed paper logs out of paper products. Done correctly, using paper logs can help you save money and the environment. Things You'll Need
- Old newspaper, cardboard, junk mail and other loose paper
- Paper briquette maker
- Water
- Bucket
- Drying racks

Collect old newspaper, cardboard, junk mail and other loose paper products.

Shred the paper into thin strips and place the strips in a bucket. Add water and allow the paper to soak for several minutes.

Stuff the paper into the briquette maker until it is completely full. Push down on the levers to squeeze out the water.

Put the paper brick onto the drying rack in a dry, well-lit place, such as a windowsill. Allow the brick to dry for several months.

Tips & Warnings
Because compressed paper logs do not burn as long as real wood, you can use a combination of paper logs and real wood in your fireplace or stove. Use the ash from the fire in your compost pile.
Avoid using magazines or other paper products covered in gloss or plastic coating, which can produce smoke when burned.
