How to Insert a Table in FrameMaker

Many technical writers use FrameMaker to create user manuals.

Adobe FrameMaker is a desktop publishing program designed to build large documents, such as user manuals. FrameMaker is more complicated than basic word processing software because you have many more options for formatting your work. This flexibility gives you a lot of freedom, but it can also make simple tasks, like inserting a table, less intuitive and more complex.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the point on the page where you would like your table to appear. FrameMaker allows you to place a table anywhere on the page except a footnote.

    • 2

Click on "Table" and "Insert Table" on the toolbar at the top of the screen.

    • 3

Select "Format A" from the options on the "Insert Table" menu. Format A is a standard table format.

    • 4

Type in the number of columns and rows for the table. You can also select the number of heading rows, or rows with labels, or footing rows, which are useful to provide summaries or totals for each column.

    • 5

Click "Insert" on the "Insert Table" menu. The table will appear on your page with a symbol that looks like an upside-down capital "T" at the point where you inserted the table. Take care not to accidentally delete this symbol or you will delete the entire table.

    • 6

Type the information in each row and column.

Tips & Warnings

  • To change options in the table after you have already created it, click on "Table" on the top tool bar and select the appropriate option, such as "Add Rows or Columns."
