Lock the wallpaper on your PC using Regedit.

The Windows Operating System contains many configuration settings within the registry. These settings can be altered using a program built into Windows called “Regedit.” You can use “Regedit” to configure Windows in ways that are not possible with other configuration utilities such as the “Control Panel.” For example, you can remove the “Background” tab from the “Display” settings in the “Control Panel” using “Regedit.” This prevents users from changing the desktop wallpaper, which is useful for companies that have strict computer policies.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the “Start” menu and select “Run…” to open up the “Run” dialogue window.

    • 2

Type in “Regedit.exe” to launch the registry editor software. A two-columned window appears. In the left-hand side of the window is a listing of all the categories of registry keys. The column on the right displays all of the registry keys in the category selected on the left.

    • 3

Navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System” from the left-hand column.

    • 4

Right-click an open space in the right-hand column. A menu appears.

    • 5

Select “New\DWORD Value” from the menu. A new value is created.

    • 6

Double-click the new value to edit it.

    • 7

Set the value name to “NoDispBackgroundPage” and set the value to “1" (do not add quotation marks to either the name or to the value). Press the “OK” button to save these changes.

    • 8

Close the registry editor. The wallpaper is now locked. It cannot be changed unless the “NoDispBackgroundPage” registry key is changed to “0” or deleted.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not change any setting in the registry unless you are sure of its impact. You can cause serious damage to your Operating System by changing certain registry entries.
