Instructions

    • 1

Remove the back panel of the bookcase and lay it with the interior side facing up on your work surface. Most back panels are attached with small finishing nails. The panel should be easily pried off by inserting a screwdriver or putty knife between the panel and outer edge of the back of the bookcase and carefully prying the panel off.

    • 2

Clean the panel with a household cleaner containing a degreasing agent. Allow the surface to dry completely.

    • 3

Lightly sand the bookcase panel using fine-grade sandpaper. It is not necessary to sand away the veneer completely. Sand just enough to roughen up the surface so the paint will adhere.

    • 4

Wipe the panel with a clean, damp cloth to remove all traces of sawdust. Allow the surface to dry completely.

    • 5

Apply two light coats of interior wall paint using an angled paint brush. Allow each coat to dry completely before reapplication.

    • 6

Reattach the panel to the back of the bookcase, with the painted side visible from the front of the bookcase.

Tips & Warnings

  • If removing the back panel is not possible, lay the bookcase on its back for easier painting.

  • Use interior wall paint in a semi-gloss finish for added durability.
