How to Attach Personal Files to a Kindle
Amazon’s Kindle allows users to read e-books formatted for the device. However, it also allows users to transfer personal files. The device recognizes Microsoft Word, PDF, RTF and HTML, as well as the image file extensions JPG/JPEG, GIF, BMP and PNG. The Kindle automatically converts these files to the appropriate format to use on the device, but complex documents may not display correctly. PDF files don’t need to be converted because the Kindle includes a PDF reader.

1
Plug the small end of the Kindle cord into the Kindle.

3
Go to “Computer” or “My Computer” and double-click the drive labeled “Kindle.” The Kindle drive may also open up by itself as soon as you plug in the USB drive.
-
4
Open the folder where the files are located that you want to transfer. Drag the file to the appropriate folder in the Kindle drive. Folder options in the Kindle drive include active content data, audible, documents and music.

Transfer files via email if you don’t have a USB drive. Visit Amazon’s Manage Your Kindle page to set up a Kindle email address to receive files and an approved email address you will use to send files. Files transferred should be fewer than than 50 megabytes. Amazon charges 15 cents per megabyte in the U.S. and 99 cents per megabyte outside the U.S.

Tips & Warnings
If you are away from your USB drive, you can send a file via email free to name@free.kindle.com. You can then download the file to your USB drive at a later date.
Kindle will only recognize files that are compatible with the device and don’t contain digital rights management software.
