How to Do a Greek Hairdo

Ancient Greek hairstyles were quite ornate in comparison to modern hairdos. Elaborate curls, hairpieces interwoven into the hairstyle and braiding all were common features of the Greek hairdo. Greek hairstyles were developed with the hair up or down, and you can replicate either style based on your preference. In any case you will need specific supplies as well as several hours of your time to structure your Greek hairdo. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Wear It Up

    • 1

Pull your hair back in a tight, high ponytail. Secure the ponytail at the top back of your head with a rubber band or hair tie. Use hair spray, as needed, to keep small strands of hair in place around the ponytail.

    • 2

Curl the hair extending from the ponytail with a curling iron. Make large curls, curling strands of hair about ¼ inch wide. If your hair is very short, attach a curled hair extension to the front of the ponytail with bobby pins instead, pulling the curled hair down over your own hair in the ponytail. Do not brush out the individual curls.

    • 3

Wrap each curl around your forefinger, one at a time, and pin the curl to your head with a bobby pin. Pin the bottom of the curl so that you cannot see the pin. Start at the front of the ponytail, work to the sides and then the back. Shape the curls into a large, curly pile of hair on the center, back, top portion of your head. Spray the entire mass of curls with hairspray to secure the curls in place.

    • 4

Pin one end of a faux braided hair extension just below the bottom back of the curly hair section on your head with a bobby pin. The braid should run along the edge of the pile of curls, bordering the curls tightly. Pull the braid around to the front of the curls, pin it in place, then pull the other end of the braid back around to the back of the pile of curls and pin it in place again.

    • 5

Pull a ¼-inch section of hair down in front of each ear and curl the strands tightly with a curling iron to make tendrils.

    Wear It Down

    • 6

Part your hair in the middle and set it overnight on curlers or curl the entire bottom of your hair with a curling iron. If using curlers, use sponge rollers and hair-setting gel for a tight spiral curl, curling about every ¼-inch strand of hair.

    • 7

Remove the curlers from your hair and do not brush it, but allow it to fall around your shoulders.

    • 8

Gather the hair at the sides above your ears and pull the sides of the hair back to just above and behind your ears and clip the hair in place with ornate hair clips.

    • 9

Measure around the top of your head, from the forehead to the back of your head and back to the front, adding about 2 inches to your measurements to tie a headband on your head.

    • 10

Cut a length of gold braid to match your measurements (plus the 2 inches) with scissors, attach faux gold leaves around the front of the braid with craft glue and allow the glue to completely dry. Wear the braid like a 1960s head band, across the forehead and tied off at the back of your head.
