How to Clear the Dryer Vent When a Sock Gets Stuck
Dryers don't actually eat socks, but it is possible for the footwear to get sucked into the lint filter if the filter becomes dislodged while the dryer is running. When this happens, the sock may be sucked into the dryer vent line or into the vent itself. A sock that becomes stuck in the vent creates a risk of fire because it limits the ability of the dryer to eliminate hot air. It's important to clear the dryer vent as soon as possible to reduce this risk and to ensure that the appliance continues to operate normally. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet, if the dryer runs on electricity, or shut off the gas supply for gas dryers.
-
2
Scoot the dryer two to three feet from the wall.
-
-
3
Use a screwdriver to loosen the clamp that attaches the dryer vent hose to the dryer. Remove the clamp and pull the vent hose free from the wall. Place the vent hose on the floor in front of you.
-
4
Illuminate the interior of the vent line with a flash light to see whether the sock is visible and within reach. If it is, simply pull it free. If not, move on to the next step.
-
5
Place a thick sock over the end of a toilet snake. Secure the sock with duct tape so there is no risk of it slipping free while attempting to clear the dryer vent.
-
6
Push the toilet snake slowly through the dryer vent line so that any obstructions will also be pushed along.
-
7
Take off the outdoor dryer vent cap, which may require you to remove several screws.
-
8
Examine the interior of the vent with the flashlight. Reach inside and retrieve the sock if it is easy to access. If not, go back indoors and use the toilet snake to push the sock close enough to reach.
-
9
Reattach the outdoor dryer vent cap.
-
10
Remove the toilet snake from the vent line and reattach the vent to the back of the dryer. Slide the appliance back in place and plug it back in. Turn the gas back on, if necessary.
