How to Make Chrome Pipes in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop CS5 is a photo manipulation program that allows you to edit preexisting photos to add filters and other special effects. Additionally, you can even use the native tools in the program to create certain objects, such as chrome pipes, from scratch. Creating chrome pipes in Adobe Photoshop CS5 requires the use of gradients and native filters.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Photoshop CS5 and press "Ctrl" and "N." Select any document size, set the background to "White" and press "OK."

    • 2

Press "D" to reset the colors, followed by "G" to switch to the paint bucket tool. Click anywhere on the empty canvas to fill it with the color black.

    • 3

Press "Alt" and "L" to add a new layer to your canvas, and then press "X" to switch the foreground and background colors. Click the marquee icon to switch to that tool. Click and drag your cursor on the canvas in a vertical marquee so that it is a shape of a pipe.

    • 4

Press "G" twice to switch to the gradient tool. Click the "Reflect Gradient" variation in the top toolbar menu. Click and drag your cursor from the center of the marquee to just a little outside of the dotted line on either side. Release the mouse, and the gradient will appear only within the marquee. Press "Ctrl" and "D" to remove the marquee, leaving behind the gradient, making a flat pipe.

    • 5

Click "Filter," followed by "Noise" and "Add Noise." A new dialog box will appear with further options. Set the amount of noise to 10 percent, set the distribution to uniform and check the box beside "Monochromatic." Click "OK," adding a snowy overlay to your pipe.

    • 6

Click "Filter," followed by "Blur" and "Motion Blur," opening a new dialog box with further options. Set the angle to 90 degrees -- this will change depending on the direction of your pipe -- and the distance to 10. Click "OK" to apply the filter, giving the pipe a proper texture.

    • 7

Click "Filter," followed by "Stylize" and "Lighting Effects," opening another dialog box with further options. Set the intensity to 14, focus to 0, gloss to 86, material to 89, exposure to 25 and ambiance to 32. Click "OK," applying a chrome effect to your pipe.
