How to Fold Fabric for Cushions

Make homemade cushion covers with bright fabric.

Cushions and pillows can enhance an interior decor, adding vibrant colors, textures and patterns to your room. When you wish to recover cushions, you can make homemade covers using fabrics that will match your room’s style and colors. As you begin the sewing project, prepare and fold fabric for cushions to ensure that the fabric is smooth.

Things You'll Need

• Pressing mat
• Iron

Instructions

1. Find the selvages of the fabric — these are the two opposite edges that may have a line of printing running parallel to the edges. Selvages are the uncut edges as the fabric comes off the bolt.

2. Fold the fabric with the wrong sides facing in and the right sides facing out, aligning the selvage edges precisely. This will fold the fabric in half.

3. Press the folded fabric with an iron to remove wrinkles and smooth the fabric.

Tips & Warnings

• As you prepare to cut the fabric out for the cushion covers, place the fabric in a single layer with the wrong side facing up and the selvages at the top and bottom edges. Trace around the cushion pattern or measure the dimensions you require for the cushion onto the fabric with a fabric marker.
