How to Reduce My Laptop Computer's Hum thumbnail
Keep your laptop fan clean and running smoothly.

You laptop emits a certain small amount of noise as the result of processing. But when your laptop's noise level increases over time and the hum becomes unbearably loud, it's likely the cause of a faulty fan within the laptop. Fans can become stiff and clogged with dust over time, so cleaning and servicing the component and ensuring it works properly on a regular basis should help to reduce the noise your laptop makes when you're using it.

Instructions

    • 1

Power down your laptop. Unplug your laptop and disconnect the power cord.

    • 2

Flip your laptop over on a stable surface. You'll find screws in each of the corners of the laptop case. Use a Philips screwdriver to loosen the screws and remove them. Put them in a secure place that you can access quickly.

    • 3

Lift the back of the case from the laptop. Inside, you'll notice a variety of components, including the motherboard and processor. Locate the fan, which will be a moveable part. Try not to touch any other component.

    • 4

Point a can of compressed air at the fan with the nozzle 12 to 15 inches away from the parts. Press the button for the air in short bursts to release the air and blow dust away from the fan. If you have a computer vacuum, use it to suck up excess dust, but never use a regular vacuum on your computer, as it could build up static electricity.

    • 5

Apply one drop of silicone-based lubricant, which can be found in hardware or computer stores, to the base of the fan. Over time the fan can become stiff, causing a grinding noise when the computer is in use.

    • 6

Replace the back cover on the laptop and replace the saved screws. Flip the laptop back over and boot it up. Listen carefully to see if the service has reduced the laptop's overall hum. If not, the fan could be faulty and needs a replacement from a computer repair technician.
