Crochet alphabet squares to make a baby's ABC afghan or words. In order to crochet an alphabet square, you must know how to do the chain stitch, the single crochet stitch and the puff stitch. Use an alphabet pattern to help you keep track of the letter shape as you stitch the square.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a starting crochet chain stitch by wrapping the end of the yarn around your finger to make a loop. Remove the loop from your finger and drape one end of the yarn down across the center of the loop and then pull it through with a crochet hook to make another loop. Pull the yarn tight, then wrap the long end of the yarn around the crochet hook. Pull the yarn through the loop currently on the hook. Continue making loops and pulling them through until you have made a chain of loops or crochet stitches that is one more stitch longer than the length as the alphabet crochet pattern.

    • 2

Insert the crochet hook from the front of the chain of loops to the back through the first two loops on the chain. Wrap the yarn around the crochet hook, going from the back around to the front of the hook, then pull the yarn through the two loops on the hook. This is the starting stitch for the first line of stitches of your alphabet pattern.

    • 3

Insert the crochet hook through the loop next to the first two loops you just made a stitch through. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook, and pull it through to make the next single crochet stitch.

    • 4

Continue making single crochet stitches according to the pattern. When you reach the letter portion of the pattern, you will make a puff crochet stitch.

    • 5

Make a puff crochet stitch by first inserting the crochet hook into the loop above the puff stitch on the pattern. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook, and pull it through to place three loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook once more so that you have four loops on the crochet hook, then reinsert back into the loop you just inserted it through. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook once more, and reinsert it through the same stitch so that you now have five loops of yarn on your crochet hook.

    • 6

Continue making the puff crochet stitch by wrapping the yarn over the crochet hook and reinserting it through the same loop four more times so that you have a total of nine loops on the crochet hook. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook and pull the yarn through all of the loops on the hook to finish the puff stitch. Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook, insert the hook through the next two crochet stitches, then push the yarn puff forward so that it stands out of the crochet stitch line.

Continue making single crochet stitches and crochet puff stitches as you follow the alphabet crochet pattern.

    • 8

Finish the alphabet square by chain stitching the last line of the pattern.
