How to Use a G1 on AT&T

The G1 is the first Android powered phone; it launched in October 2008.

The HTC G1 Android phone is locked to the T-Mobile network but it can be unlocked to run on the AT&T network. Since both AT&T and T-Mobile use the Global System for Mobile communication, or GSM, network technology the G1 phone is compatible with both networks. T-Mobile, however, has locked the subscriber identity module card slot to only accept T-Mobile SIM cards. You need to unlock the SIM card slot with a code from T-Mobile before you can use your G1 on AT&T.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your G1. Remove the battery cover and the battery. Locate the white sticker and write down the numbers after: "IMEI." Replace the battery and battery cover. Power on the phone.

Call T-Mobile customer service at 1-800-937-8997. Inform them that you want the unlock code for your T-Mobile G1 phone. You must have had service with T-Mobile for 40 days for a post-paid plan or 60 days for a pre-paid plan. Give the representative your IMEI number when they ask for it. They will send the request to HTC and email you the unlock code within a few days.

Power off your G1 and remove the battery cover. Remove the T-Mobile SIM card and insert the AT&T SIM card. Replace the battery cover and power on the phone. You will be prompted to enter the unlock code. Type it in carefully. Double-check to make sure that you've typed it in correctly. If you made too many incorrect attempts to unlock the phone it will be disabled. When you're sure it's correct press "Unlock." The phone will display "Phone is Unlocked."

Wait for the phone to scan for available cellular networks. It will lock on to the AT&T network -- provided you have signal -- and you're ready to use your G1 on AT&T.
