Some dress shoes have fewer holes than others.

Some pairs of dress shoes use laces to close them, the same way that tennis shoes are closed. However, some dress shoes may have fewer holes than most other types. For instance, a pair of your best shoes may have only four holes to use for lacing them up. But the number of holes doesn't have a big impact on the way you lace and tie them. Instructions

    • 1

Locate the center of the lace by folding it in half. Crease it slightly at the fold, to help you find the center point as you lace the shoes.

    • 2

Feed one end of the lace through the bottom hole on one side of the shoe, and the other end through the other side. Pull both sides, until the crease is centered over the tongue, below the sides of the shoe.

    • 3

Cross the lace on the right side over to the left side, and feed it up through the next hole on the left side. Cross the left lace end to the right side, and feed it through the next hole on the right. The laces should pass from under the shoe to the top of the shoe, when feeding them through the hole.

    • 4

Pull the shoelaces tight. The laces can be loosened to put the shoe on and then retightened when you tie the shoe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shoes with only four holes will not feel as tight on your foot as shoes with more holes.
