How to Change RAR Files to Show Up on a Mac thumbnail
You can toggle file extension visibility on your Mac.

If you have a file that’s saved in the RAR format on your Mac but you cannot see the RAR file extension you can change it so it will show up on your Mac. People compress files with the RAR format to make them smaller so they can transmit them over the Internet and so they’ll take up less storage space. If your file doesn’t show up as a RAR you need to adjust settings on your Mac to change it.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the folder containing the RAR file on your Mac.

    • 2

Click “Finder” from the Finder menu, then click “Preferences.”

    • 3

Click the “Show All Filename Extensions” check box to select it. Click the red circle at the upper left corner of the Finder Preferences window to close it.

    • 4

Click the RAR file to select it. Click “File” from the Finder menu, then click “Get Info.” The file’s Info window appears.

    • 5

Click the “Hide Extension” checkbox under “Name and Extension” to uncheck it. Click the red circle at the upper left corner of the Info window to close it. The file now shows up as a RAR file on your Mac.
