How to Make Knit Circle Scarves

Use any worsted-weight yarn to make a knit scarf with a repeated circle design.

Adding a circle design to knitting, which is composed of square stitches, is a little challenging. However, you can approximate the shape in purl stitches, which stand out against a background of knit stitches. The back side is the opposite -- a raised purl background with a recessed circle shape made of knit stitches in the center. A series of these circles in a row, with a border of seed stitch, becomes a scarf you can knit out of the yarn of your choice.

Things You'll Need

• U.S. size 8 knitting needles
• Worsted-weight yarn

Instructions

1. Cast on 24 stitches and knit the first four rows in seed stitch, which means alternating knit and purl stitches. For row one, knit one stitch and purl one stitch, and then repeat that pattern for the rest of the row. For row two, start with the purl stitch and then knit and purl for the rest of the row. Repeat rows one and two for rows three and four.

2. For row five, knit one stitch, purl one, knit 20, purl one and knit one.

3. For row six, purl one stitch, knit one, purl eight, knit four, purl eight, knit one and purl one.

4. For row seven, knit one stitch, purl one, knit six, purl eight, knit six, purl one and knit one.

5. For row eight, purl one stitch, knit one, purl five, knit 10, purl five, knit one and purl one.

6. For row nine, knit one stitch, purl one, knit four, purl 12, knit four, purl one and knit one.

7. For row 10, purl one stitch, knit one, purl three, knit 14, purl three, knit one and purl one.

8. For row 11, knit one stitch, purl one, knit two, purl 16, knit two, purl one and knit one.

9. For row 12, purl one stitch, knit one, purl two, knit 16, purl two, knit one and purl one.

10. For row 13, knit one stitch, purl one, knit two, purl 16, knit two, purl one and knit one.

11. For row 14, purl one stitch, knit one, purl three, knit 14, purl three, knit one and purl one.

12. For row 15, knit one stitch, purl one, knit four, purl 12, knit four, purl one and knit one.

13. For row 16, purl one stitch, knit one, purl five, knit 10, purl five, knit one and purl one.

14. For row 17, knit one stitch, purl one, knit six, purl eight, knit six, purl one and knit one.

15. For row 18, purl one stitch, knit one, purl eight, knit four, purl eight, knit one and purl one.

16. For row 19, knit one stitch, purl one, knit 20, purl one and knit one.

17. Repeat Steps 2 through 16 five times or until the scarf is the length you want.

18. Repeat Step 1 for the border and bind off.
