How to Troubleshoot a JD 644H Loader

The 644H loader is a type of earth mover that is manufactured by John Deere. The engine for the this model of loader runs on diesel fuel. As with all equipment that relies on diesel engines, it is not immune to various problems you can experience when using the machine. Problems with the loader can include not starting, poor idling and other issues that can be easily fixed once the problem is known.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the ignition key to the “Run” position to see if the engine cranks. If the engine cranks, but doesn't start, verify there is gas in the gas tank of the loader. Fill the tank with gas and try to start the engine again.

    • 2

Remove the screw that is used to attach the cover for the air filter. Remove and examine the air filter to see if it is dirty. A dirty air filter will restrict air flow to the engine and can result in a loss of power. Fix this problem by replacing a dirty air filter with a new one.

    • 3

Test the battery for the loader with a voltmeter. Connect the red colored probe on the “Positive” battery terminal and the black colored probe to the “Negative” battery terminal.

    • 4

Read the display to determine the voltage of the battery. If the voltage of the battery is lower than 12.5 volts then the battery is low or dead and needs to be charged. Replace a dead battery with a new one.

    • 5

Start the loader and let the engine idle. If the engine idles rough then the gas may be of poor quality. To see if the gas is bad, you need to drain the gas tank and then add new fuel. Start the engine after the new fuel is added to see if the problem goes away.

    • 6

Examine the transmission pump suction screen for debris or other obstructions if the clutch is slipping while in gear. Remove the screen and clean off the debris.

    • 7

Pull the fuse for the park brake out of the fuse panel and see if it has blown. A blown fuse activates the brakes and prevents the loader from moving. Replace a blown fuse with a new one.
