Measure the circumference of your head from the base to the front hairline. Wrap the yarn around your hook and make a chain about an inch or two shorter than your head measurement. For example, if your head circumference measures about 21 inches, then your chain should be about 19 or 20 inches. The number of chain stitches you make depends on the weight of yarn that you use. For medium-weight cotton yarn, you should get about three or four chains per inch, using a four-millimeter crochet hook. The shorter length enables your completed headband to stretch around your head for a snug fit.

Single crochet in each chain for one row. To make a single crochet stitch, insert your hook into a chain stitch and pull a loop of your yarn through the chain. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the two loops on the hook to complete the stitch. When you reach the end of the first row, chain one. Then turn and single crochet in the opposite direction for rows two through four.

Chain two at the end of row four, then make a half double crochet in each single crochet. The looser tension of the half double crochet creates the slouchy effect in your headband. Wrap your yarn around the bottom of your hook, insert it into a stitch below and pull up a loop of yarn. Wrap the yarn around your hook again and pull it through all three loops on the hook to complete the stitch. Continue making double crochet rows until your headband is the width your desire. For example, an average sized slouch headband can be about six to eight inches wide. Return to single crochet for the final four rows.
