How to Digitally Ink Line Art on Corel Painter

The Corel Painter graphic art software, which allows you to create digital images on your computer, provides a cloning and tracing paper option that you can use to draw digitally inked line art on top of an existing picture or piece of digital art. Digital artists often use this to create line work on an image originally drawn with traditional media and later scanned as a digital file to the computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Corel Painter on your computer.

    • 2

Click “File,” and then click “Open” to browse your computer for the image you want to ink. Double-click the image to load it in the program.

    • 3

Click “File” and then click “Quick Clone.” This will copy an identical version of the image into a new window, allowing you to trace over it. You can adjust the opacity of the tracing paper setting from the “Clone Source” window.

    • 4

Select the “Brush” tool from the tool bar and adjust the brush settings from the top toolbar. Change the number in the “Size” text box depending on how thick you want your lines to be.

    • 5

Select a color for your lines from the color picker tool.

    • 6

Draw on the canvas, over the top of the cloned image, to create your digital ink work. This will create a completely separate image without changing the original.

    • 7

Click “File” and click “Save” to save your digital inked image as a picture on your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • For the best digital inking results, increase your original image’s DPI settings and size. Higher DPI results in smoother lines, while a larger image allows you to zoom in and draw more small details.
