How to Put Cells on Top of the Background in Dreamweaver

If you're used to using older versions of Adobe Dreamweaver, you may notice the absence of the background selector for your tables in CS5 in the newer ones. This former option allowed you to add a background to your table, over which cells could be placed. This feature is still available as of publication in October 2011, but it relies on Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS, instead. Although this version of the feature offers greater control of table formatting, it is considerably less intuitive.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your HTML page in Adobe Dreamweaver.

    • 2

Click the bottom border of your table to select it.

    • 3

Enter a name for your table in the "Table" field of the bottom Properties window and press "Enter." If you cannot see the Properties window, click "Window" and select "Properties."

    • 4

Right click the table, point to "CSS Styles" and click "New."

    • 5

Click the top drop-down menu in the New CSS Rule window and select "ID (applies to only one HTML element)."

    • 6

Enter the table name you chose earlier in the "Selector Name" field.

    • 7

      Click "OK."

    • 8

Click "Background" in the left pane of the CSS Rule Definition window.

    • 9

Click the "Browse" button, located to the right of the Background-Image field, and select your preferred background image from the navigation window.

    • 10

Click "OK" to have your cells appear on top of a background image.
