Adding Tulle to a Tiara

Adorn a tiara with a beautiful veil of tulle.

Transform a tiara into a beautiful veil for your own wedding or even for a Halloween costume. The transformation is simple and you can customize the tulle veil to any length you like. Make a short blusher veil from the tulle that lies forward to cover your face or attach a fingertip-length tulle veil to the back of the tiara for a beautiful, billowing bridal accessory. Making the veil yourself can save significant money.

Things You'll Need

• Tulle -- at least 2 yards
• Scissors
• Serger or sewing machine
• White thread
• Tiara

Instructions

1. Cut the tulle for the veil. Make the tulle as long as you like by about 40 inches wide. This will provide a relatively full veil. You can move on to preparing the veil for the tiara or follow the next step to make a gentle, rolled hem for the edges of the veil.

2. Lay one width end of the tulle in front of you. This is the top of the veil. Bring the left side of the tulle over to the right to fold it in half. Rotate the tulle to put the bottom end directly in front of you and cut a curved edge at the rough-edge corner. This removes the sharp corners at the bottom of the veil.

3. Unfold the tulle and fold over 1/8 to 1/4 inch around each side of the veil except for the top. Fold over another 1/8 to 1/4 inch of tulle along each of the same edges. Use the serger to sew the rolled hem or set the sewing machine to a wide zigzag stitch and sew across the length of the folded edges.

4. Sew a 3/8-inch straight stitch across the top of the tulle with thread and then tug on the thread to gather the top of the veil to the width you would like.

5. Lay the gathered edge of the veil underneath the tiara and use thread to sew the tulle to the tiara.

Tips & Warnings

• For a veil that can be removed from the tiara, cut two coordinating strips of hook and loop fastener. Cut both pieces to the width of the tiara by the length of the gathered edge of the tulle. Spread fabric glue on the underside of each piece. Press one piece against the top of the gathered edge of tulle and the other piece against the underside of the tiara. Press the two pieces together to attach the tulle veil.
