How to Send Control Codes in a Hyperterminal

The HyperTerminal program was used to connect to other computers, bulletin board systems, Telnet sites, online services and host computers. HyperTerminal was primarily used in the era before widespread use of the Internet. Still, HyperTerminal may still used to monitor messages that are sent to and from the computer, since the HyperTerminal records sent messages, allowing you to see whether the HyperTerminal is connecting correctly and whether the settings are correct. To do so, you send commands through the HyperTerminal and check the results.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to “Accessories” in your program folder, go to “Communications” and then find and click on “HyperTerminal." One HyperTerminal entry will pop up that does not have an .ht extension. Close this.

    • 2

Enter a name into the dialog that appears. Choose an ICON. Click “ok.” Click the drop-down arrow next to “Connect using” and select the COM port connected to your modem. The phone number and dial boxes will turn grey. Click “ok.”

    • 3

Click “ok” when the COM properties box pops up. Type AT into the dialog box that appears. The word “OK” should appear. Now you can control your modem using command codes.

    • 4

Type “AT DT” whether you want to tone dial a number. Type “+++” to escape to command mode. Type “AT H” to hang-up. Type “AT O” to return to the data-online mode.

    • 5

Memorize command codes that you can use to perform actions using the HyperTerminal. For example, the “AT D” command code is used to dial. Type “AT Z” to reset the modem. While some command codes work with almost all modems, some modems only recognize certain command codes.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you leave the HyperTerminal, you will receive a message that asks you to save the settings. Click “yes” and you will automatically be set up to access HyperTerminal in the future, without having to go through the steps to set it up.

  • If you have a 56k modem, set the Bits per second to 57,600 or 115,200.

  • Unlike other codes, the +++ codes do not appear in the HyperTerminal after you type them, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t go through.
