How to Crochet a Thick Shell Headband

Crochet a thick shell headband with bulky-weight yarn to keep your head warm in winter. By starting with a double-banded headband and crocheting around it, you can work up a shell headband quickly. Shell stitch is a zig-zag stitch that forms points on either side of the headband. The stitches necessary for making the band are single, half-double and double crochet. By alternating these stitches, you form the points of the shell stitch headband pattern.

Chain two stitches. Join the chain around one end of the headband with a slip stitch.

Work a row of slip stitches around one band of the headband. Turn the stitches so the V-shaped top edge points to the side.

    • 3

Slip stitch around the other end of the headband, then turn it and slip stitch around the other band. Join the slip stitches with the first chain stitch using another slip stitch.

Crochet into each stitch all the way around as follows: make one single crochet, one half-double crochet, one double crochet, one half-double crochet and one single crochet. Work these five stitches into every slip stitch.
