Window air conditioners are open to the outdoors and collect a lot of dust and dirt as a result. A clogged filter and bent coil fins cause the air flow to decrease and the unit to operate inefficiently. If you've noticed that your unit is no longer cooling, it cycles on and off repeatedly or your electric bill has increased, you should clean the filter and straighten the coil fins on the exterior side of the unit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Unplug the air conditioner. Remove the filter cover. Cover styles vary by make and model, but they are positioned across the front of the unit and usually feature a handle or lip on one side. Remove the filter.

Vacuum the filter. For thorough cleaning, fill a kitchen sink with warm water and a splash of mild dish detergent. Soak the filter for 15 minutes to loosen dirt and dust.
