Some people will do anything to cause a good fright.

People celebrate Halloween in different ways. Some decorate their houses and stay home to give out candy, others dress up and go out to local parties. And some people dress up and hide themselves amidst the decorations in order to better startle Halloween trick-or-treaters. There is an art to staying hidden among the decorations, however. After all, the trick-or-treaters will spot you a mile away, if you don't look like just another innocuous piece of scenery.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress to fit your surroundings. If the predominate theme of your decorations is "Star Wars," you're going to look a little out of place if you dress like a zombie. Tailor your costume so that it coincides with what's on your lawn or porch. The more you look like you're supposed to be where you are, the less the trick-or-treaters will notice you.

    • 2

Dress "fake." If you're going to pull off a successful "rise up and scare" technique, you need to look like a decoration. In fact the more like a cheap decoration you look, the better off you will be. Kids will notice ultra-realistic costumes, but if you just look like a fake spider made out of a couple black trash bags and some pipe cleaners, they'll just think someone inside skimped on the decorating budget.

Don't move. Successful scare tactics require you to be as still as possible. After all, real Halloween decorations don't breathe or scratch their nose when it itches. Be still and silent, until the last possible second before you jump up and scare the bejeepers out of the kids.

    • 4

Divert their attention. You don't want the kids keeping too close an eye on you, so make sure there are other things nearby that are more likely to keep their attention. The candy bowl, for instance, makes an excellent diversion. The kids may look at you, but they'll pay more attention to those full-sized snickers bars you have in the bowl on your porch, leaving you ample opportunity to spring your scary surprise.
