How to Do Morphs in "Gimp"

The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a free and open-source graphics editing platform, similar to Adobe's Photoshop and Corel's Paint Shop Pro. GIMP can support many different types of independently developed plugins, such as the GIMP Animation Plugin. This plug-in tool is used to create animations from still pictures. One of its features is the ability to morph one picture to another, using keyframing and the built-in animation tool.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install GIMP, then download and install GIMP Animation Plugin (GAP). GAP automatically finds the GIMP installation directory. Open GIMP, then go to the Plug-ins menu and select "GAP."

    • 2

Select the "Source Layer/Image" drop-down and pick a picture that you want to morph. The two pictures you morph between should be the same file format and the exact same image size. Scroll the keyframe over to "30" (or whatever you wish), then click "Add Point."

    • 3

Select the final image that the original will morph into from the drop-down "Select layer/image" menu. Choose the "stepmode" pulldown and select "Morph." This morph animation can be previewed with "Preview Anim" at the bottom before being saved. When you are ready to save, hit "OK," return to "GIMP" and select "Save" or Save As."

Tips & Warnings

  • Morph animations are usually saved as animated GIF files.
