The Windows Region and Language options can update a keyboard for French.

The Windows 7 operating system can adapt your keyboard to the French language, thereby allowing you to insert French accent marks on your Microsoft Word documents. The Windows Control Panel contains the Region and Language options that update the keys, and the Installed Services section displays the list of French options. You can select the French language for Canada, France, Luxembourg, Monaco and Switzerland.

Instructions

      Click “Start” and "Control Panel." The screen displays the Adjust Your Computer Settings dialog window.

      Click the “Region and Language” icon link to display the dialog box.

      Click the “Keyboards and Languages” tab.

      Click the “Change keyboards” button to display the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box.

      Click the “Add” button in the Installed Services section.

      Scroll down the list of languages. Click the “+” symbol to the left of your preferred French option, such as “French (Belgium) or “French (France).” A short list appears.

      Click the “+” symbol next to “Keyboard” to display a short list.

      Click to select the check box for “French.” Click “OK.”

      Click “Apply” on the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box, then click “OK.”

      Click “OK” to close the Region and Language dialog box, then close the Adjust Your Computer’s Settings dialog window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Open the Microsoft Word program to display a new document and experiment with the adapted keys.

  • The keys you type may not correspond with the characters on the screen. For example, pressing the single quotation mark key may insert a grave accent. Affix adhesive letters to update the keys of your keyboard.

  • The Windows taskbar displays a language bar with abbreviations for languages, such as “FN” for “French.” Use it to toggle between French and other language keyboard options.
