Galvanized valves stick due to mineral accumulation.

Galvanized valves are used in a variety of locations in residential plumbing, such as the shut-off valves for water supplies in sinks and toilets. When it comes time to remove or replace these valves, homeowners often find they are stuck. The galvanized qualities of the valves prevent rust, however, mineral deposits often build up, cementing them in place. Loosening the valves requires force to break the material that has formed around the connection. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply to the home before loosening or removing the galvanized valve. The main water shut-off is located outside the home, typically near the road. It is in the ground with a flat metal cover. Remove the cover and turn the water shut-off knob counterclockwise to shut off the water.

    • 2

Walk inside the house and turn on a tub or sink faucet. Let the faucet run to drain out any remaining water from the pipes. When no more water comes out, proceed with the valve loosening .

    • 3

Place a towel under the valve to catch excess water that may still be trapped inside of it. Kneel down if needed so that you can easily access the valve and have room to turn it.

    • 4

Spray the connection of the valve and the pipe with a penetrating oil or lubricant spray until all portions are saturated. Wait one to two minutes to give the oil time to work.

    • 5

Place a pipe wrench around the valve base and tighten it until it does not move. Place another pipe wrench on the pipe behind the valve and tighten it as well.

    • 6

Grasp the handle of the wrenches in opposite hands. Turn the valve wrench counterclockwise and hold the other wrench handle steady to provide leverage. Continue exerting force until the valve loosens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you loosen the valve, it’s a good idea to screw it off all the way to detach it. Then scrub the pipe connection with a wire brush to remove the mineral debris.
