How to Make a List on PeerGuardian

PeerGuardian is a software utility that enables users of peer-to-peer file sharing programs to prevent certain ranges of IP addresses from accessing their computers. This can enhance file-sharing security by blocking the IP addresses of organizations that discourage file sharing as well as networks commonly used by hackers. Unfortunately, this may also block your access to certain online games and other services. With PeerGuardian, you can create a custom list of whitelisted (allowed) and blacklisted (disallowed) IP addresses. Use PeerGuardian’s list manager to make your own custom list.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch PeerGuardian from the desktop shortcut or click on the Windows “Start” menu, type "PeerGuardian 2" into the search box and press "Enter." The application's main menu opens.

    • 2

Click the "Protection Manager" tab at the top of the window, and then click the "List Manager" button on the left. The List Manager window opens.

    • 3

Click the "Create List" button at the bottom of the window. The Create List window opens.

    • 4

Click the "Description" field and type a name for the list such as "My Blocked Addresses."

    • 5

Click the "Browse" button. Navigate to the location on your computer where you want to save the list, type a name in the "File Name" field and click the "Save" button. This generates the list file.

    • 6

Click the "Block" radio button at the bottom of the window to make a list of blocked IP addresses. Alternatively, click the "Allow" radio button to create a list of whitelisted IP addresses.

    • 7

Click "OK" to begin adding addresses to the list.

    • 8

Click the "Add" button in the lower left corner of the window. A blinking cursor appears under "Range."

    • 9

Type a description in the "Range" column; use this as a note to yourself to indicate why you are blocking or allowing the IP address range. For example, you might type "Educational" if you are blocking a range of IP addresses at a university. Press "Enter." The cursor moves to the "Starting IP" column.

    • 10

Type the first IP address in the range that you want to block or allow. For example, type "192.168.0.1" and press "Enter." The cursor moves to the "Ending IP" column.

    • 11

Type the last IP address in the range that you want to block or allow. For example, if you type "192.168.0.10" after typing "192.168.0.1" in the first column, PeerGuardian also blocks or allows the IP addresses 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 and so on.

    • 12

Press "Enter" to save the list entry or continue adding items if desired.

    • 13

Click the "Save" button to save the list and add it to the List Manager. PeerGuardian begins using the new list immediately, along with any other lists you’ve added.
