How to Frame an Image in InDesign CS5

Digital artists and designers proficient in InDesign use frames to provide structure, graphic design and emphasis to objects on the page. Over the years, Adobe has changed the way frames are created and images are cropped. In previous versions of InDesign, the designer refit the frame by dragging the frame's handles; vertical justification within a non-rectangular frame was ignored. With InDesign CS5, many more options to create a frame are available.

Instructions

Use the “Selection” tool in the Tool palette to choose the element on the page that you want to frame. Click and drag the cursor to create a frame around your image or text. Alternatively, click the element's existing frame, and then choose a line weight and style from the control panel.

Select "Object" from the main menu and then scroll down to "Fitting." Select an option from the sub-menu. Choose "Fit Content to Frame" to automatically resize your element to fit the existing frame, or "Fit Frame to Content" to resize the frame to match the size of the element. Choose "Center Content" to center your element within the frame. Choose "Fit Content Proportionally" to resize the element without losing its proportions. The frame and element may have a gap between them. Choose "Fill Frame Proportionally" to fill the frame. Some of the element may be cropped to fit the frame. Click "OK" when finished.

Click the “Selection” tool and choose the frame to specify an option to automatically set the frame for each new element placed on the page. Select "Object" from the main menu. Scroll down to the "Frame Fitting Options" sub-menu from the "Fitting" menu. Choose "Auto-Fit" to automatically resize the image when you change the size of the frame. Choose "Reference Point" to determine where you want cropping to occur. Choose "Crop Amount" to add or remove space between the bounding box and the frame. Choose "Fitting on Empty Frame" to specify how you want the content to fit; for example, if you want the image to fit the frame with some distortion or skewing of the image, or you want the image to fit proportionally within the frame while leaving some space around the content. Choose "Fill Proportionately" to fill the frame and crop some of the image.
