How to Make Tiny Food for Dolls That Is Not Made From Clay

Buying clay to make small doll's food for yourself or for your children can prove not only expensive, but unnecessary. With only some white bread, glue, water, food coloring, a toothpick and clear nail polish, you can make something just as effective. The only thing is that you will have to make dough yourself, but all this requires is a food bowl and a strong kneading action. Once the models have been made, you only have to leave them overnight before they're a ready for your dollhouse.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup table salt
  • Food coloring (orange and green to make carrots)
  • Toothpick
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon or fork
  • Kitchen knife

Instructions

  1. Making the Bread Dough

    • 1

Mix the flour and salt together and make a well in its center.

    • 2

Pour one-quarter of the water into the center of the mixture.

    • 3

Mix the ingredients with a fork or spoon, slowing pouring in the remaining water. If you feel you need more water, you can add more, but don't add too much. Too much water will make the dough too spongy.

    • 4

Mix the bread, glue and bread thoroughly until it is has a dry elastic quality similar to that of clay. You can use a fork or spoon for this but it's faster and more effective to knead the mixture with your hands in the same way you would make dough for a loaf of bread.

    • 5

Use a kitchen knife to divide the dough into sections. If you know exactly what kind of doll food you will want, divide it up depending on how much dough you will need for each type of food. Otherwise, divide it into equal sections.

    Carrots

    • 6

Dye three quarters of one section orange. This will be the main part of the carrot. Dye the other quarter green. This will be the head of the carrot.

    • 7

Split the orange part of the dough into as many tiny carrots as you want.

    • 8

Roll each tiny part into a carrot shape.

    • 9

Use a toothpick to create a realistic texture on the surface of the carrot. You can do this by examining the surface of a real carrot. You will see that the surface is full of lines right down to its end. Replicate those lines on your models, lightly and with the point of the toothpick--you don't want the lines to go too deep.

    • 10

Take off a part of the green section that's about three-quarters the size of the carrot.

    • 11

Use the toothpick to divide the green section into four of five individual stems. Leave a part at the bottom intact so that your leaves have a base.

    • 12

Attach the green leaves to the carrot. Make the rest of the carrots using the remainder of the orange and green bread dough.

    The Finish

    • 13

Bake your carrots in the oven at 300 degrees for about an hour. Be sure to check them after about 40 minutes.

    • 14

Leave your carrots to cool down for about 45 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's best to work indoors, especially in the summer, as warm weather tends to dry out the bread mixture before you've finished.

  • Make sure that the dough is the right consistency before you start.

  • Use a real carrot as a model for your doll carrots.

  • Be creative with the food dye. Try adding more colors to give the carrots a better texture.

  • If you want your food to have nice glazed look, varnish with a product such as clear nail polish.
