How to Get an Engine Maintenance Team on "Pokemon HeartGold"
In "Pokemon HeartGold," the S.S. Aqua is a ship used to ferry you from Olivine City on the continent of Kanto to Vermillion City on the continent of Johto. When you first arrive in Olivine City, the ship is inaccessible because the engine is out of commission and the engine maintenance team are out to lunch. Unfortunately, the team's lunch break extends the full length of the game and they will not return to work until you have completed the game's main storyline.

Finish the game by defeating the Elite Four and wait for the credits to roll. After the credits are finished, load your game from the Start menu. You will appear in your bedroom in New Bark Town.

Walk downstairs and talk to your mother. She will inform you that Professor Elm is looking for you. Travel to Professor Elm's laboratory in the western part of New Bark Town.

Talk to Professor Elm to receive the National Pokedex and the S.S. Ticket.

Fly to Olivine City. Talk to Professor Oak outside the S.S. Aqua to receive the National Pokedex, which allows you to capture Johto region Pokemon. Talk to the ship's captain to show off your S.S. Ticket and board the ship.

Tips & Warnings
When you are able to board the S.S.Aqua, the captain will not set sail until a missing girl has been found. To find the little girl, search the captain's quarters in the basement of the ship. She will run away to the western part of the basement. After finding her again, she will be reunited with her father and you will be able to set sail to Vermillion City. After your maiden voyage on the S.S. Aqua, the ship will follow a specific schedule. You can only board the S.S.Aqua on Mondays and Fridays in Olivine City and Sundays and Wednesdays in Vermillion City. Each time you travel on the ship, there will be new trainers available to battle and the captain will reward you with a different plate.
