VST, or virtual studio, plug-ins allow you to expand the audio effects and capabilities of your Pro Tools mixing software. VST plug-ins can perform the same functions as physical instruments and effects pedals without you having to purchase the device. Plug-ins are actually small programs that add expanded functions to existing software and must be installed in a process similar to software programs.

Open a Web browser and visit the site that hosts the VST plug-in.

Click the "Download" link for the plug-in that you want to add to your Pro Tools software. Click "OK" in the prompt that appears and click "Save" to save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the downloaded "Installer.exe" file that is copied to your desktop to launch the installation wizard. Click "Next" and click "Install" to add the plug-in to your Pro Tools software.
