How to Make a Balloon Topiary Centerpiece for a Baby Shower
When you go into a baby shower, your eyes are drawn to colorful, textual decorations. The thing you notice immediately is the centerpiece. Instead of the typical floral arrangement, dress up your shower with a whimsical, colorful balloon topiary centerpiece. Place your topiary in a central location where guests can place their gifts around it. Create your own custom centerpiece for the next boy, girl or unknown baby shower you host.
Things You'll Need
- 1-inch dowel, 10 inches long
- Ribbon, 2 colors
- Latex balloons
- Hot-glue gun
- 8-inch flower pot
- Stencils (optional)
- 8-inch floral foam ball
- Drill
- ½-inch drill bit
- String
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brush
- Glue
Instructions
-
-
1
Drill a hole in your dowel one-half inch from the top and a second hole one-quarter inch from the last one. Drill them in the same direction through the dowel.
-
2
Blow up eight to 10 balloons for your topiary. Tie a string to each balloon and leave 12 inches of string on each balloon.
-
-
3
Grasp all the strings together as tight as you can get them. Tie the strings together with a knot. Set the balloons aside.
-
4
Push the bottom of the dowel through the floral foam ball so that it goes all the way through it.
-
5
Paint the floral foam ball to match the balloons. Paint the outside and inside of the flower pot also. Allow both the flower pot and floral foam ball to dry.
-
6
Glue the foam ball with the stick through it into the bottom of the flower pot with a hot-glue gun.
-
7
Wrap the first color of ribbon around the top of the dowel and tie a knot. Leave long strands of ribbon on both sides of the knot. Knot the ribbon above the first hole you drilled. Squish it up if you have wider ribbon.
-
8
Wrap a second color of ribbon between the two holes and tie it in a knot so the knot is on the opposite side of the dowel from the first ribbon knot.
-
9
Place the balloons on the top of the dowel. Split the strings hanging off the balloons in half and push half of them through the first hole and half of them through the second hole in the opposite direction. Pull the strings tight and tie the two sets of strings together in a knot. Cut off the excess string. Your balloons should be secure to the top of your topiary now.
-
10
Take each side of the ribbon you knotted on the top of the dowel and wrap it around the dowel in the opposite direction so it creates an “X.” Then wrap it again so it creates another “X.” Continue until you reach the top of the floral foam ball and the bottom of the exposed dowel. Tie it in a bow and clip off the extra. Repeat this process with the second ribbon and tie it at the bottom.
-
11
Decorate your ceramic flower pot. Add ribbon around the edges or glue on decorations. Push silk flowers or bows into the floral foam ball to disguise it. Use stick pins to push ribbons or bows through the foam. Glue bows and ribbon between the balloons to add interest and texture.
