How to Crochet a Bear Face
A crocheted bear’s face contains two eyes, a nose and sometimes a mouth on a head with two ears. Most of the bear’s face components are round except for the nose and mouth, which are a triangle and a curved line respectively. A crocheted bear’s face that is about the size of a drink coaster to a potholder is suitable for those purposes or as an adornment to another crocheted project such as a young child’s blanket or knitted winter stocking hat.
Things You'll Need
- 1 crochet hook
- 75 yards of dark-brown yarn
- 20 yards of black yard
- 20 yards of light-brown yarn
- Scissors

1
Fold three inches of the end of the dark-brown yarn over to form a loop. Tie a knot under the loop so the knot has two ends, one a couple inches long and the other containing the remainder yarn.
-
2
Create six chain stitches by placing the loop over the crochet hook and wrapping the long yarn end around the back of the hook and under the hook’s notch once. Pull the yarn through the loop with the crochet hook. A chain stitch yields a new loop each time for pulling the yarn through.

3
Place the chain-link side of the six stitches facing upward and put the crochet hook notch first through the first chain-link. At this point, you have two loops over the crochet hook and the six-stitch yarn chain has been curved into a circle.
-
4
Chain stitch three more times. This process prepares you for a double crochet.
-
5
Grab the yarn with the hook without pulling the yarn through as if you are about to create four chain stitches. Instead, push the crochet hook through the hole in the middle of the looped six chain stitches, grab the yarn and pull it through the hole so the hook has three pieces of yarn looped around it.
-
6
Begin another chain stitch with the three pieces of yarn wrapped around the hook but pull the yarn through only the first two pieces of yarn wrapped around the hook. This yields two loops around the hook. Start a second chain stitch but this time pull the yarn through the two remaining loops around the hook.
-
7
Repeat Steps Five and Six until a full circle is formed. Remember to wrap yarn around the hook before piercing through the center of the original six chain links. The crochet hook must have two loops around it before it goes through the center to grab a third.
-
8
Close the circle’s gap from the start point to the finish by grabbing a loop from the beginning so the crochet hook has two loops. Pick up the yarn and pull it through the two loops.
-
9
Tie off the ends and continue the double crochet by using the space under each outer chain link as the center hole for piercing the hook and grabbing the third loop. Double crochet under one chain link once and the next twice, and alternate that pattern until the second, exterior circle is reading for closing.
-
10
Make two small half circles for the ears by double crocheting dark-brown yarn only halfway around a six-stitch chain loop. Connect them to the bear’s face, which is the larger circle, with a simple overhand sewing stitch.
-
11
Make one small full circle from the light-brown yarn for the snout. Attach it to the middle of the face with light-brown yarn and overhand stitching.
-
12
Add a series of overhand sewing stitches with black yard in a circle formation for the eyes. Create a black triangle over the light-brown snout. A single row of black yarn yields a mouth.
