How to Decorate a Banister With Pictures

While banisters are a practical safety feature on staircases in most two-story homes, they are not always very visually interesting or decorative. Decorating your banister with pictures is an easy way to dress up your staircase and make it more welcoming to family members and visitors alike. While hanging pictures directly on the banister is ill-advised, as the pictures are likely to fall, you can easily make a photo garland to hang on your banister using basic craft supplies. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the photographs you wish to decorate your banister with. Select family photos, pictures of scenic landscapes or any other images that you find visually interesting. The photos should all be roughly the same size.

    • 2

Use the ruler to measure across the top of each picture. Mark the center of the top of each picture using a pencil.

    • 3

Use the hole punch to punch out a hole in the place you marked with the pencil.

    • 4

Use the tape measure to calculate the length of your banister. Add 6 inches to this measurement to provide you with enough excess ribbon to secure the garland to the banister. If you want the photo garland to hang tightly against the banister, you will want the length of the ribbon to match this length. If you want the garland to drape or hang loosely from the banister, add 1 foot to this measurement.

    • 5

Measure and cut a piece of ribbon that is equal in length to the measurement you chose for your banister.

    • 6

Thread the photos onto the ribbon through the holes punched along the top. You may wish to hang the pictures tightly together or space them out on the garland.

    • 7

Tie each end of the garland onto each end of the banister securely.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make your photographs more sturdy, you can laminate the photos or glue them onto card stock paper prior to punching out the holes.
