How to Change Thinking Regarding Money
A bad economy prompts people to rethink and reframe their attitudes about earning money and spending habits. A shift in beliefs about money helps people to weather a recession either by offering perspective on financial difficulties or by empowering people to take action. Changing long-held and ingrained beliefs about money is challenging, but when done repeatedly over a sustained period of time, a person can change his financial picture and influence the financial beliefs of future generations.

1
Focus on finding financial solutions. When financial difficulties hit, it is easy to become bogged down with feelings of worry and despair. Unfortunately, staying in these feelings will do nothing to rectify the situation. Acknowledge concerns by writing them in a journal or discussing them with a trusted family member or friend, but spend the bulk of your time and energy brainstorming ways to increase income or decrease spending.

2
Focus on abundance. Directing attention to what you do have instead of what you lack may sound counterintuitive, but the law of attraction is based on the philosophy that like attracts like. Spending time thinking about a lack of money will only attract more of the same and thoughts of never having enough can lead to despair. Instead, spend time each day being grateful for the money and things that you do have. Gratitude creates an energy to which money is attracted.

Focus on needs. For some people, negative beliefs about money come not from a lack of it, but from a constant state of wanting more money and things even if basic necessities are covered. If you fall into this category, write a list of needs and luxuries. Reframe thinking about luxury items by treating them as rewards after accomplishing a goal rather than a "must-have" item. Often, once a person recognizes and focuses on his ability to support his basic needs with ease, his perception about his financial picture is that he has abundant financial resources.

Focus on ways to be self-employed. One negative view of thinking about money is that it is controlled by others. This belief causes people to be at the mercy of employers. Self-employment is empowering because you control your own destiny. Self-employment is not only operating a business, but can also be as simple as earning money by babysitting, cleaning, cooking or performing any skill that is in demand in the marketplace. Some of the most successful companies, such as Microsoft and Hewlett & Packard, are the result of creative thinking during a stagnant economy.
