Too much time on Facebook can lead you to neglect your friends and family back in the real world.

Facebook addiction causes serious issues for some people. You may be a budding Facebook addict if you find yourself losing sleep over the site, need to check it constantly whether at home or on the go, avoid work or homework in favor of perusing your wall or spend more than an hour on the site every day. Recognizing these signs is one of the first steps to overcoming an addiction to Facebook. Beating the temptation requires willpower and personal discipline, but it can be done.

Instructions

    • 1

Track how much time you use Facebook every day. Don't allow yourself to spend more than an hour on the site.

    • 2

Close the tab or window you use Facebook in when not using the site. If you don't have Facebook open you will face less temptation to use it, and it will be easier to keep track of how long you're using the site.

    • 3

Disable text and email notifications. Facebook messages can wait until later, and getting notifications will only tempt you to visit the site more often. You can catch up with your messages and comments later on.

    • 4

Avoid checking Facebook on the go. If you have a smartphone, get rid of any Facebook-related apps you might have downloaded to remove the temptation to check. Don't check Facebook while you're out with friends or at the movies -- the website can wait, while the rest of your life can't.

    • 5

Set aside one or two times a day to check the site, perhaps just before school or work, or only during your lunch break. Only allow yourself to check the site for a specific amount of time, perhaps 15 to 20 minutes.

Find other hobbies to occupy your time. Maybe you've been neglecting your reading list or always meant to pick up the guitar. With the time you save by avoiding Facebook, you can learn new skills or rediscover old hobbies.
