Things You'll Need
- Hanging baskets can be used to store fruit and vegetables or to organize your bathroom, kitchen, pantry or child's bedroom. Suspending a basket from the ceiling is a simple job that can be completed in minutes without special tools or advanced decorating skills. A medium-duty hook, attached to the ceiling and ceiling joist, securely holds the basket, connecting chain and the basket's contents. If you plan to hang the basket in an area where there is no ceiling joist, you will have to first install a winged or toggle-type hook in the ceiling.

1
Hook three evenly spaced S-hooks around the edge of the basket. They should be approximately 120 degrees apart. Measure from the ceiling to the height where you want the basket to hang. Add 6 inches to that dimension to calculate the length of the suspension chains.
-
2
Make three pieces of suspension chain. Measure the chain, then hold the link that you intend to remove with two pairs of pliers. Attach one pair of pliers to each side of the link and twist in opposite directions to open the link. Repeat to make the remaining suspension chains the same length.

3
Locate the ceiling joist closest to where you intend to install the hook, using a stud finder. Drill a pilot hole through the ceiling into the joist. The diameter of the drill bit must be slightly smaller than the threaded shank of the hook. Insert the point of the hook in the pilot hole. Turn clockwise until the curved portion of the hook meets the ceiling.

4
Gather the upper ends of the suspension chains that are attached to the basket. Hang the ends of the chains on a single S-hook. Hang the S-hook on the installed ceiling hook.
