How to Take the Door Off of a General Electric Refrigerator
Refrigerators are bulky items that often need to be shifted with a dolly through tight doorways and stairwells during a move. You might find removing the door of your GE fridge enables you to access spaces that were otherwise too small. The door may also need to be removed in the event of damage. Because GE makes several models of refrigerator in a variety of different designs, some instructions might vary when applied to your particular appliance. Does this Spark an idea?

Unplug the refrigerator and disconnect the cold water supply in preparation for moving. It is not enough to switch the thermostat to "Off."

Remove the plastic grille below the doors to access the connections if your refrigerator has an automatic water or ice dispenser built into the door.

Pull apart the electrical connections to remove the power supply to the dispenser. Push in on the white collar of the water connection and pull the two pieces of line apart.

Use a putty knife to pry the plastic cover off the top hinge bolts. Set the cover to one side; you will need it when you re-attach the door. Use a stepladder if you need help reaching the hinge.

Remove the 5/16 inch or 1/8 inch hex head screws holding the top hinge in place and set to one side.

Carefully lift the door off the lower hinge; place it on a towel to protect it from damage. Repeat these instructions for any other doors that need removing.
