How to Glue PVC Pipes Under a Bathroom Sink

PVC pipes used underneath your bathroom sink are basically a lightweight, less costly alternative to metal pipes, that are also easy to install. Weld PVC pipes together at their joints with glue, or more specifically, pipe cement. The pipe itself is not difficult to cut. A main concern when doing this is working within the tight confines underneath the sink. Follow the right steps to keep the sink pipes from leaking in the future. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance between the shoulders of the fittings on each end where the PVC pipe will fit, using a tape measure. Mark this measurement on the PVC pipe, using a pencil.

    • 2

Cut the PVC pipe to the right length, using a hacksaw. File the cut end of the PVC pipe smooth, using a fine-tooth file. Scrape away any burrs from the inside of the cut end, using the blade of a utility knife.

    • 3

Fit the PVC pipe into position underneath the sink, to make sure that it is not too tight or too loose. Mark a line down both the PVC pipe and the fittings, where they meet, using a pencil. This allows you to glue them together in this same position. Separate the PVC pipe from the sink plumbing.

    • 4

Brush a light coat of primer on the end of the PVC pipe and on the inside of the fittings. Wait about 15 seconds to allow the primer to soften the plastic surfaces.

    • 5

Brush a coat of pipe cement on the PVC pipe and inside the fitting, where you applied the primer.

    • 6

Slip the PVC pipe into position, with its ends inside the fittings and the pencil mark aligned on the pipe and fittings. Twist the PVC pipe 1/4 turn, then twist it back so that the pencil mark is aligned once again. This spreads the pipe cement.

    • 7

Hold the pipe in position for about 30 seconds, so the cement can properly bind the parts to each other. Wipe away any cement that oozed out onto the PVC pipe, using a rag. Wait at least one hour before you run sink water through the pipe.
