Build a sturdy support structure to support hammocks.

Hammocks provide a peaceful and comfortable place to relax during the warm months. While hammocks are traditionally hung between trees, you can also build a support structure for it in the yard. The structure consists of sturdy posts that can withstand the weight of the hammock and occupant. Building the structure is fairly straightforward and homeowners can do it themselves. The most important part is measuring the height of the hangers to ensure the hammock does not touch the ground. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Drive a stake at the location of the first post. Measure the length of the hammock plus an additional 24 inches from this mark. Drive another stake to designate the second post.

    • 2

Put on work gloves and dig a 24-inch deep hole in each marked location, using the post hole digger.

    • 3

Mix up a bag of concrete mix with water using a wheelbarrow to mix in. Use the amount of water instructed, or until the concrete looks like thick peanut butter.

    • 4

Insert a post into each hole. Place a level on the side of the post to make sure it's plumb. Split the concrete between the holes and check the posts again for level. Let the concrete cure overnight.

    • 5

Place a tape measure on the ground at the base of the posts and measure up to determine the location for the eye hooks. If your hammock has a bar across each end, measure up 4 feet. If the hammock has no bars measure up 6 feet. Mark each location with a pencil.

    • 6

Insert a one-half inch drill bit into a drill and create a 1-inch deep hole at each marked location. Insert a threaded eye hook into each hole and twist them until they are tight using your hand. Then twist each hook an additional two to three times using a wrench.

    • 7

Hang the end loops of the hammock onto each eye hook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Walk around the yard to locate a desirable installation location. Check sunlight exposure throughout the course of a day to ensure you achieve the desired amount of shade.
