1. Hold a compass flat in your hand. Approach the front door. If your home has more than one door that leads outside, approach the door most often used by you and your family.

2. Open the front door and stand directly in front of it, with your back facing the home's interior. Face the street or yard.

3. Look at the compass. Note the direction of the arrow on the compass. This is the front door's direction.

Tips & Warnings

• Your front door's direction determines the best color to paint the door. For example, a south-facing door does best when colored red or purple. A west-facing door benefits from white or yellow paint.
