How to Do Floor Trim in Archways
Archways, as with doorways, require a trim board on the floor to cover the floors of the two rooms that the archway adjoins. The trim board is called a threshold or saddle. Select a wooden threshold made from oak or another hardwood for a durable and lasting installation. Thresholds are installed over the floor just below the archway and conceal the transition from one floor to the other. They come prefinished, so you simply need to cut the threshold to size and fasten it securely to the floor. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Prefinished hardwood threshold
- Radial arm saw
- Sanding block
- Drill
- Pilot hole bit
- Trim head wood screws
- Screw gun
- Safety goggles
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure the distance between the sides of the archway along the floor, using a tape measure. This is the length required for the threshold.
-
2
Lay the threshold on a work surface, and measure and mark it to the measurement you took in Step 1, using a tape measure and pencil.
-
-
3
Place the threshold on the table of the radial arm saw. Slide the threshold along the table of the saw until the pencil mark lines up with the outside edge of the blade. Cut the threshold to length with the saw.
-
4
Sand the cut end of the threshold lightly with a sanding block to smooth away the roughness from the saw cut.
-
5
Center the threshold on the floor in the archway. Drill pilot holes through the threshold every four to six inches, using a drill equipped with a pilot hole bit.
-
6
Drive trim head wood screws through the pilot holes with a screw gun to secure the threshold to the floor.
